INT. House - DAY

SOPHIA ( Younger lady in her early 20’s, in a relationship with Lennox, tired) comes home in a ragged uniform as her hands grip her purse. Stepping inside, her eyes glance at the moldy pop cans from overnight on the desk. On her bed is Math, Science, Geography, she writes while laying in bed.

Sophia

Kaylee! What's going on with the heat right now? I thought we paid enough to turn it back on again?

Sophia pauses a moment, listening for a response, peaks over to the stairwell to see Kaylee’s door shut, heads back to her studies. LENNOX ( A younger man in his early 20s) holds his fishing rod from outside the door, twisting open the door handle, setting the rod down and raising his tackle box.

Lennox

(shouting)

Guess who just got a massive trout!

Sophia looks up in discontent

LENNOX

This guy!

Int. Room - MOMENTS LATER

Lennox goes to hug Sophia, and she just looks up at him blankly. He laughs and sets his things down, brushing pop cans out of the way.

LENNOX

Woah, totally forgot about those. Crazy night, me and the boys probably got like a world record in kills in that RPG or something.

Sophia still says nothing

LENNOX

What? You never seen a guy with a fishing rod before? He starts to reenact his reeling in the fish in front of her.

He pauses and pretends to reel her in. Her mind looks to be somewhere else.

SOPHIA

Did they get back to you?

He raises back down the rod, looking concerned, suddenly leaning to her beside the bed.

LENNOX

Did who get back to me?

He pushes her hair past her ears.

SOPHIA

Don’t.

What? He leans in for a kiss. She pulls back.

LeNNOX

Oooo okay bad mood today?

Watching her continue to write and read her textbooks Lennox swipes them down to the floor and heads to the closet to pick out some fancy tropical looking shorts.

Lennox

Aren’t you sick of working?

Sophia

Of course I am, but it needs to be done...Notice anything different with the house today?

LeNNOX

What's that?

SOPHIA

We didn't have enough money to pay for the air conditioner...

LeNNOX

Yeah okay, and that's why I want to go to the beach. I don't know how you're not sweating in here.

Sophia looks down at her books at the floor, then stares back at Lennox with a subtle anger.

SOPHIA

It’s been six months, Lennox... Six months since you promised me you’d find a job. You finally got this interview offer, and refuse to even look at it.

She hops off the bed to grab her textbooks, brushing his shoulder and into the kitchen.

LENNOX

So do you wanna go to the beach or not? Because you clearly need a break.

He picks out a pair of shorts for her, maneuvering his way to the kitchen, and throwing the shorts at her. He misses and knocks over more pop cans.

INT. Kitchen - CONTINUOUS

SOPHIA

I mean, maybe I’ll go to the beach, if you pick up your cans, maybe show me your job offers.

She slightly smiles and picks up her shorts from the ground then looks back at Lennox waiting for a response.

LENNOX

C'mon. It’s hot as hell. Let’s just go to the beach. We're gonna be able to get the air back later.

Sophia's smile drops

SOPHIA

No. Lennox, please. I don’t want go to the fucking beach.

She looks down at her shorts, and then back over at Lennox, she walks over to hand him the shorts. Lennox's eyes dart to the ground just before seeing her arms reach out. Pushing the shorts to her chest the two of them, unblinking, stare into each other's pupils.

LENNOX

Just for a few hours. The work will be here when you get back.

SOPHIA

I still need to sleep Lennox, like to have actual rest, finish my assignments and more.

(pausing) We got to the game a little last night, but today has to be productive, we have to be adults here.

LENNOX

What does that shit even mean?

Lennox slumps back to the bedroom, settles, plummeting the bed, his eyes still glued to the kitchen before noticing his rod. He sighs. Sofia quietly follows, sitting on the edge of the bed.

INT. Bedroom - CONTINUOUS

SOPHIA

It means that one of us isn't helping to pay the bills and seems to have a lot of time to relax. Others might actually have to worry about keeping the lights and air conditioner on.

Lennox's face shifts to growly.

LENNOX

“Others” yeah real mature of you. You know more than anyone that the job market stinks right now. I mean I can't imagine you chose that work for fun.

SOPHIA

You’re right! I am mature! I chose it to have a life and an apartment with a boyfriend between jobs.

Wooden steps creek and crack amidst the argument that ensues.

LENNOX

When are you going to let this go? I'm trying, you want me to show you my emails? I got loads of em, fucking FedEx, all the fast food chains, even the telemarketer agency down the street.

SOPHIA

(interrupting)

And yet, here you are.

LENNOX

Here I am? You know what. Fuck the emails. Already enough having to look at that bullshit everyday. Hell, you wouldn’t even believe me anyway, would you? You never do. All you do is work, work, work, and never have any time for anything, like seriously, all I asked was for you to go on a short trip with me to the beach and you throw a hissy fit, god.

Taps echo from beside the open door and Sophia turns to notice her roommate is awake. Making eye contact, her roommate, wide eyed, is motioning her toward the kitchen. Glancing at Lennox, Sophia gets up to follow.

LENNOX

Oh come on. Now you'll leave?

SOPHIA

Yeah, I will.

He rubs his hands through his hair, bending down to pick up the purse from the ground and starts dumping its contents everywhere in the room.

LENNOX

(yelling)

Like seriously! You know you need me as much as I do you! Like the fuck do you think you’re going!

Sophia snorts a little, and starts to head out, one arm wrapped around Kaylee, the other clenching a small pair of shorts.
